As a mother of two adult children, Najuma Shields has a unique perspective of the university experience. She has supported her children through college and now grad school and carries the same level of support and care into her daily work. The reward of seeing students achieve their goals inspired her to pursue a career in higher ed.

Najuma earned her undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA in Marketing. She is a marketing professional with over 25 years of experience, including 13 years at Wiley. Since joining Wiley, her work has revolved around analyzing and interpreting data. She plays an integral part in developing strategy, executing initiatives, and optimizing performance metrics for our partner universities.

She especially enjoys the innovative nature of her role as Brand Manager. Whether utilizing a new marketing channel or bringing a personal touch to the forefront, Najuma has the chance to make sure prospective students can see themselves within our marketing. She also loves learning from our partners’ passion and expertise. “It’s fantastic to see how so many fields, like cybersecurity, social work, accounting, and nursing, all impact our community and lives in different but equally amazing ways.”

Najuma spends most of her free time coaching and officiating high school track and field. As a former collegiate athlete, she still has a lot of love for the sport. “It’s great for us as coaches to see our athletes grow from season to season and turn their hard work into success.”
