Wiley University Services Awards Grants for Innovation in Online Learning

Faculty and administrators receive funds for approved proposals

Oak Brook, IL (19 June, 2018) – Wiley University Services, a division of Wiley that provides tailored services and technology solutions to higher education institutions, is pleased to announce it is awarding seven grants to faculty and administrators at its partner institutions to fund innovations in online programs. These grants will be used to support projects designed to positively influence student outcomes in those partners’ online programs. This is the first year that Wiley has offered the grants, which it expects to award on an annual basis.

All administrators, faculty, and adjuncts at current Wiley partner institutions were eligible for the award. In the spring of 2018, Wiley received 21 proposals from 15 different programs across 10 university partners. The winning proposals will receive grants for funds, as well as access to Wiley resources, which together value more than $138,000. The winners were:

  • Elizabeth Ritt, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, CNE, Professor of Nursing and Health, Benedictine University. Elizabeth’s proposal involved developing two interactive financial management case study simulations for the nurse executive leadership track in the Master of Science in Nursing program. The grant will be used to research case study writing best practices, attend a nursing simulation conference, and develop the case studies.
  • Jason Ostrander, PhD, MSW, Assistant Professor, and Jennifer Wilson, PhD, LCSW, Assistant Professor, Sacred Heart University. Their proposal aims to create a research methods library of media-rich elements to lessen students’ aversion to research. These media elements would be shared across courses in the program where research skills are utilized.
  • Nancy Leplante, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, Associate Professor, Widener University. Nancy’s grant will be used to refresh a RN-BSN course using third-party media as well as to integrate VoiceThread, a web-based platform that allows teachers and students to upload images, video, or documents, and submit audio, video, or text comments on them. Grant funds will be used to fund the course revision and purchase needed VT licenses.
  • The Online Master of Education in School Counseling Program, Our Lady of the Lake University. This proposal aims to increase student engagement and satisfaction through easy-to-use video collaboration tools, helping students achieve mastery in their subject area. This grant will be used to secure licenses for Zoom, a remote conferencing service.
  • Bob Andersen, MS, Director of Instructional Technology, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Bob’s proposal involved integrating custom virtual lab activities into the university’s MS in Cybersecurity courses with Hatsize. Virtual labs will alleviate the need for students to visit computer labs on campus or procure their own software.
  • Michael Ratajczyk, MA, Program Director, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Michael’s proposal seeks to integrate industry partners into a Business Intelligence & Data Analytics program by giving them the ability to review projects, provide feedback to students, and more. The grant funds will be used to fund travel for deeper industry connections to the program.
  • George Hanshaw, PsyD, Instructor, and Victoria Lowell, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor, Purdue University. Their proposal focused on creating a connected classroom for a course in Purdue’s Learning Design and Technology master’s program. Grant funds will be used to fund a redesign of the course and procure third-party technologies for student use.

“We are very excited about the positive impact these grants will have on the students at these partner schools,” said David Migliorese, Vice President of Academic Services, Wiley University Services. “At Wiley, we are always focused on innovation, and these grants give us the opportunity not only to support these proposals but to gain valuable insights that can drive even more advancements in online education.”
